When Graffiti Is Simply Litter

Let's be honest - the vast majority of graffiti is utter tripe.  It's the usual gang tagging affair - marking territory with their gang names in one of about 3 accepted graffiti font faces.  No wonder graffiti is considered "leaving a mess" by most.

This is how I equate bad graffiti to littering - it adds little to nothing artistically and just makes the place look messy and intimidating, if only mentally.  Gangbanger tagging puts fear into people, just like the "broken window" theory (the fear of being in a dangerous area).

However, let's not get too down about graffiti. I LOVE graffiti. I hate tagging. Clear? My takeaway point to those out there who may only link graffiti with gang tagging - look on the internet for graffiti artworks - you will see that graffiti is very creative and some of the best graffiti assumes intelligence in the viewer (provoking thought) and aesthetically pleasing.
